NEW DOUBLE ACTION APPROACH TO MAIZE AND WHOLECROP
"Acid based preservatives act by killing or inhibiting microorganisms so in previous attempts to combine them the bacteria had to be packed separately to keep them alive during storage. But once mixed together in a tank mix the chemical adversely affected the activity and survival of the bacteria," explained Ecosyl research director, Dr Terry Owen. "We have now solved this problem and developed a true hybrid product by capitalising on the inherent robustness of the MTD/1 strain, using patented preservation and regeneration technology and developing new formulation techniques." Chemical action is provided by a special formulation of potassium sorbate, a safe, non-corrosive food and feed-approved preservative proven to delay heating and reduce spoilage and waste. Biological action is from MTD/1, the high performance bacterial strain supported by more animal performance evidence than any other inoculant. The chemical action of acids on aerobic spoilage in silage has been shown repeatedly in MGA and Kingshay Trust trials to be more robust than inoculant treatments. This is partly due to the great variety of spoilage organisms and range of ensiling conditions in the UK. In comparative tests on both maize and wholecrop, DoubleAction Ecocorn has proved twice as effective as some leading inoculants, doubling the time before heating occurs. MTD/1 treatment of maize and wholecrop silage has been shown to give higher dry matter intake and more milk, an extra 1.6kg of milk per cow per day from maize and 2.2kg from wholecrop. The new double action technology now enables MTD/1 to be mixed with chemical preservatives without any reduction in its biological performance. DoubleAction Ecocorn has good storage life and tank mix stability and is available in both liquid and dry applied versions, priced around £1.30 to £1.50 per tonne of silage.
