SlurryKat - the future for umbilical slurry systems

The last 10 years have been characterised by a huge growth in the use of umbilical slurry systems throughout the UK and Ireland. This trend has been fuelled by the growing realisation that these combined pumping and spreading systems can allow contractors and farmers to shift 30,000 gallons of slurry per hour on land located as far away as a mile from the store in question.

A SlurryKat system in operation

"These are average performance figures," stressed Richard Fitzpatrick, the man in charge of SlurryKat, now the leading manufacturer of umbilical systems in the UK and Ireland.

"With state of the art pumps, it is possible to use umbilical spreading systems on land up to two miles away from the store. And of course, all spreading operations are carried out in the knowledge that the ground will not be damaged in any way."

To date the market for umbilical systems has been very much contractor driven. And while this trend will be maintained, Richard Fitzpatrick foresees individual farmers coming more and more into the market place.

Umbilical systems are so light that they cause litle or no damage to the ground

"On animal health ground alone, increasing numbers of farmers want to manage their own slurry," he explained.

"As a result, we have been receiving an increased number of enquiries from individual producers looking at the feasibility of owning their own umbilical system. Our response has been to develop systems of a slightly smaller capacity, designed specifically to meet this demand."

In addition Richard predicts that the implementation of the current NVZ (Nitrate Vulnerable Zones) proposals for England will provide a further boost for umbilical manufacturers.

"At the end of the restricted periods farmers will be left with huge volumes of slurry which they will want to get out on to land as quickly as possible. And in this regard only umbilical systems will be able to meet the demand created from both farmers and contractors."

Richard also points out that umbilical systems can be used to equal effect on out farms.

"It's often overlooked that these parcels of land tend to be the wettest and least accessible areas on most farms," he stressed.

"And invariably traditional tanker arrangements tend to do untold damage to the ground. In cases such as this, the more feasible option is to use an umbilical combi arrangement, with the aid of the pump built into a standard sludgigator."

Distance is no object for SlurryKat
